Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has struggled in the ongoing Duleep Trophy, managing only 104 runs across four innings. Iyer, who was left out of the squad for the 1st Test against Bangladesh, seems to be slipping out of the Test cricket setup. His disappointing run in the Duleep Trophy, combined with the rise of young talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel, has further diminished Shreyas Iyer’s chances of making a Test comeback. With experienced players such as Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul already in the squad, Iyer’s recent form has raised doubts about his immediate future in red-ball cricket.
A senior official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently commented on Shreyas Iyer’s performance, expressing concerns about his inability to capitalize on favorable batting conditions in the Duleep Trophy. “There’s no room for Shreyas Iyer in the current Test team. His shot selection has been a concern, especially in the last match. He was well set on a flat wicket but threw his wicket away to a poor shot against left-arm spinner Shams Mulani,” the official told *Telegraph*.
Another BCCI official hinted that Iyer may continue to grind it out in the domestic circuit. Although he could feature in the upcoming Bangladesh T20I series starting October 6, the player is expected to turn out for Mumbai in the Irani Cup starting on October 1 in Lucknow. If his performances don’t improve, especially in the Irani Cup, it’s unlikely he will be picked for India’s crucial five-match Test tour of Australia later this year.
“Iyer has another chance in the Irani Cup, and if he doesn’t deliver, there’s always the Ranji Trophy. Let’s not forget his strong performance in last year’s ODI World Cup and the injury he suffered. He needs to regain form, but his issues with the short ball make his inclusion in the Australia tour unlikely,” the official added.
