India head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of the opposition adapting to spin-friendly conditions, despite the fact that the first Test in Chennai will be played on a red soil pitch, which tends to favor fast bowlers.
As India prepares for the opening Test against Bangladesh, Gambhir shed some light on the possible playing XI for the Chennai match. He hinted that while spin could play a significant role later in the game, the fast bowlers might have an edge early on, given the nature of the red soil track.
Speaking about India’s lineup, Gambhir suggested that emerging talents like Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel may have to wait for their opportunities, confirming that Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul will retain their spots in the team. Both Sarfaraz and Jurel made their Test debuts earlier this year against England but might not feature in the opening game against Bangladesh.
“We don’t drop players; we select the ones who fit the playing XI. Jurel is a phenomenal player, but some players have to wait until Pant is available. It’s the same with Sarfaraz. Their chances will come, but they need to be patient,” Gambhir stated during a press conference on the eve of the first Test.
Gambhir also praised India’s experienced spin duo, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, hinting that both will be key figures in the team’s strategy. Along with Kuldeep Yadav, Ashwin and Jadeja are expected to form a three-man spin attack.
“The impact Ashwin and Jadeja can create on Day 1 and Day 5 is invaluable. We’re fortunate to have them. They can both bowl defensively and in attack,” Gambhir added.
